Pleasant Hill Renames Street in Honor of Longtime Community Advocate

Penny Bellnap, Martha Miller, Mayor Sara Kurovski

On Tuesday, September 10, 2019, Pleasant Hill City Council unanimously voted in favor of renaming the eastern portion of Meacham Drive that is located between NE 64th Street and NE 80th Street, Martha L Miller Drive.

“Martha Miller has been an integral advocate for spurring growth in Pleasant Hill,” said Pleasant Hill Mayor, Sara Kurovski. “She held a position on a Pleasant Hill board, commission, or City Council for 47 years, modeling what it means to be a public servant.

Martha Miller served on City Council for 25 years, the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Committee for ten years, and served on the Pleasant Hill Planning and Zoning Commission for eight years. Notable projects she advocated for include the development of the Copper Creek neighborhood and a fruitful partnership with the Des Moines Metropolitan Planning Organization, where she served as chairperson for four years.

It was determined the roadway needed to be renamed as the roadway’s future alignment will be north of the western portion of Meacham Drive and run parallel to it. The western portion of Meacham Drive will maintain its current name and extend east as development occurs. Street signs bearing the new street name, Martha L Miller Drive, will be installed by the end of September.
