It is the homeowner’s responsibility to make sure their project meets Homeowners Association and Restrictive or Protective Covenants requirements, as these regulations can be stricter than city ordinances.
Permit
Permit fees are based on the valuation per square foot of the deck. A building permit is required when any structural components are involved. A permit is not needed when only replacing decking boards or for the installation of a patio made from concrete, pavers, brick, etc.
Permits must be submitted with a project drawing that lists the deck dimensions, post specs, footing depth, width, and placement, and other information as listed in the example worksheet below.
